How long does it take for a Butran patch to work?
Buprenorphine patches can take up to a day or two to start working but they will last longer. Patches are usually given after buprenorphine tablets. This is to make sure that you have pain relief from the tablets until the patches start to work.

Choose an area of non-irritated, intact skin on your upper arm, outer arm, upper chest, upper back or side of the chest.
Can you swim with a Butrans patch?
You can bathe, swim, or shower while wearing BuTrans. If the patch falls off, discard the patch properly. Apply a new patch at a different skin site. Make sure the new skin area is dry.
Can you abuse buprenorphine patches?
Misuse or abuse of Butrans by chewing, swallowing, snorting or injecting buprenorphine extracted from the transdermal system will result in the uncontrolled delivery of buprenorphine and pose a significant risk of overdose and death.

You may shower, bathe or swim whilst wearing it. Do not expose the patch to extreme heat (e.g. heating pads, electric blanket, heat lamps, sauna, hot tubs, heated water beds, hot water bottle, etc) as this may lead to larger quantities of the active ingredient being absorbed into the blood than normal.
Can you wear two Butrans patches?
The total dose from both patches should not exceed 20 mcg/hour. For the use of two patches, instruct patients to remove their current patch, and apply the two new patches at the same time, adjacent to one another at a different application site [see Dosage and Administration (2.7)].
