How long does it take for a Butran patch to work?

Buprenorphine patches can take up to a day or two to start working but they will last longer. Patches are usually given after buprenorphine tablets. This is to make sure that you have pain relief from the tablets until the patches start to work.

    You can bathe, swim, or shower while wearing BuTrans. If the patch falls off, discard the patch properly. Apply a new patch at a different skin site. Make sure the new skin area is dry.

    The total dose from both patches should not exceed 20 mcg/hour. For the use of two patches, instruct patients to remove their current patch, and apply the two new patches at the same time, adjacent to one another at a different application site [see Dosage and Administration (2.7)].
